Chimney Cap Installation in Winnipeg

A chimney cap is the metal cover with mesh sides that sits on top of the flue. It's one of the least expensive repairs on this site, and keeping rain, snow and animals out of the chimney saves the liner, the damper and the brick from a lot of damage.

What a cap does

Why an Open Flue Causes Trouble

Rain and snow that fall down an open flue mix with soot and the acidic residue from furnace exhaust. That rusts the damper, cracks clay flue tiles and soaks the brick from the inside, and none of it shows from the street until the damage is well along.

An open chimney also looks like a good home to squirrels, birds and raccoons, and a nest in the flue can block exhaust from a furnace or water heater. On a wood-burning fireplace, the mesh on a cap also stops sparks from landing on the roof.

The mesh has to suit what's venting through it. On a gas appliance in a Winnipeg cold snap, a very fine mesh can collect frost and ice up, so we'll match the cap to the appliance as well as the size of the flue.

Types of caps

Which Cap Your Chimney Needs

It depends on how many flues there are, what's venting through them and how the top of the chimney is built.

  • Single-flue caps

Clamp onto one flue tile. The most common cap on a house with one appliance venting through the chimney.

    $250 to $600

  • Multi-flue caps

One cap that covers the whole top of the chimney and every flue on it, fastened to the crown. They also keep rain and snow off the crown itself.

    $600 to $1,500

  • Liner caps

A chimney with a stainless steel liner gets a cap made for that liner, usually as part of the liner install.

  • Chase covers

The metal top on a boxed-in chimney around a factory-built fireplace. Old galvanized ones rust through and hold water; a stainless one with a sloped top and a drip edge replaces it.

Prices for every repair are in the chimney repair cost guide.

  • Do I need a chimney cap?

If the top of your flue is open, it's worth having one. A cap costs far less than the damage that water and animals do to a liner, a damper and the inside of the chimney over a few years.

  • There's an animal in my chimney. What should I do?

Don't light a fire or let the appliance run until it's out. Call a wildlife removal company first, because in spring there may be babies in there and they're the right people to deal with that. Once the chimney is empty, a cap stops it happening again.

  • Will a cap stop my chimney from leaking?

If the water is coming down the flue, yes. Water in the firebox, a rusty damper or wet soot after rain all point to an open flue. Stains on a ceiling or wall beside the chimney usually come from the flashing or the brick instead.

  • How much is a chimney cap in Winnipeg?

As a ballpark, a stainless steel cap for a single flue is about $250 to $600 supplied and installed. A multi-flue cap that covers the whole crown is about $600 to $1,500, since many are made to fit.
