Chimney Rebuilds in Winnipeg
When the brick is soft all the way through, the chimney is leaning, or the top moves when you push it, patching stops being worth the money. Most rebuilds here only take the chimney down to the roofline, or a little below, and build it back up with new brick, a new crown and new flashing.

When a Repair Turns into a Rebuild
A rebuild is a big expense and plenty of chimneys don't need one, so we'll tell you if a repair will do the job. When a rebuild is the right call, it's usually because water has been getting in through a failed crown for years, and the brick above the roof has broken down from the inside while the outside still looked mostly fine.
- Brick that crumbles when you scrape it with a key
- A chimney that leans, or a gap opening up between it and the house
- Top rows of brick that move when pushed
- The same chimney needing repairs every couple of years
- Damage from a chimney fire, a fallen tree or a lightning strike
If nothing vents into the chimney anymore, it's worth comparing a rebuild with taking it down. Removal often costs less and ends the upkeep.

How Much of the Chimney Comes Down
Most of the wear happens above the roof, where the chimney is out in the weather, so most rebuilds stop there.
| From the roofline up | Full rebuild | |
|---|---|---|
| What comes down | The chimney above the roof, sometimes a few rows into the attic | The whole chimney, down to the footing if it has settled |
| Usual reason | Crumbling brick and loose top rows from years of water getting in | A leaning chimney, a failed footing, or damage all the way down |
| What's new | Brick, crown, cap and flashing | Brick, flue lining, crown, cap and flashing |
| Ballpark | $3,500 to $9,000 | $12,000 and up |

How do I know if my chimney needs to be rebuilt?
A rebuild is usually the answer when the brick crumbles if you scrape it with a key, when the chimney leans or has pulled away from the house, or when the top rows move if you push on them. A chimney that has needed patching every couple of years is often there as well.
Do I need a permit to rebuild a chimney in Winnipeg?
It can need one, particularly when a chimney is rebuilt from the ground up or a new liner goes in for a fuel-burning appliance. We'll check what applies to your job and look after the permit if one is needed.
Can you match my existing brick?
Usually closely. We'll look for new brick that's close in colour and size, or use salvaged brick for older houses, and you'll see a sample before anything is ordered. A rebuild above the roofline is only seen from a distance, which makes the match easier than it sounds.
How much does a chimney rebuild cost in Winnipeg?
As a ballpark, rebuilding a chimney from the roofline up is about $3,500 to $9,000, and a full rebuild from the ground starts around $12,000. Height, access, the number of flues and how hard the brick is to match all move it.
